There’s nothing like a beautiful glass of wine to pair with an extraordinary dish. But reading wine lists in restaurants can be confusing, overwhelming or downright scary.

Many restaurants around the world are noted for their wine offerings. Possibly the best wine pairing we’ve had was at the late, lamented Loam on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula. The pairing at Igni (the fine dining eatery featuring many of the same team from Loam) was very good but didn’t hit quite the same heights.

Internationally, we were blown away by the wine pairing at Osteria Francescana in Modena but, admittedly, for most fine dining experiences we tend to content ourselves with an excellent bottle of champagne. So this new survey from The World of Fine Wine, in association with Octavian Wine Vaults, a UK-based wine storage facility, was interesting because it gives an opinion on the best restaurants around the world to indulge a big variety of wine preferences. So here are some  highlights from ‘World’s Best Wine List 2017’, which organisers say is the equivalent of Michelin Stars for wine in restaurants.

Best overall wine list globally was at the Palais Coburg in Vienna, while New York City’s Rouge Tomate Chelsea took wine list of the year and best long wine list in the world.

Worldwide there were 372 restaurants that received the top tier ‘three-star’ award. New York had the most number of restaurants receiving that honour – 42 -followed by London (29). Melbourne (The Foodie World’s home base) was in third place with 17 restaurants, followed by San Francisco and Sydney with 15 restaurants apiece.

Here are the various category listings, which are dominated by the US. Eleven Madison Park, a restaurant where we’ve enjoyed a big variety of wine offerings over the years, well deserves its recognition, as does Singapore’s extraordinary Restaurant André. Where a link is included below will take you to further posts on The Foodie World.

Given the naming convention in other parts of the world is different from Australia, it’s often hard for travelling Australians to know what to order. But if you’re in a restaurant that prides itself on wine, talk to the staff and chances are you’ll not only enjoy a great tipple to accompany your meal, but you might learn a thing or two!
