Restaurant reviews, Bay 101 Port Melbourne

A delightful piccolo

Despite being so close to one of Melbourne’s city beaches – and home to the dock where cruise ships and the Tasmanian ferry berth – Port Melbourne is very much a local hangout. No doubt tourists abound but the cafes are full of dog-walking, pram-pushing young couples (and a smattering of older folk).

Bay Street, which runs down to the water, is home to a thriving shopping strip. A semi-regular haunt for Greedy Girl and her fitness instructor friend Miss Divine, we often head for brunch after a big workout at the local gym. Having already tried Creme and had a very enjoyable breakfast, Greedy Girl was keen to go a little further afield. Miss Divine steered her towards Bay 101.

It had to be said, Greedy Girl had some slight misgivings. On entering she noted that the restaurant’s main claim to fame was as a pizza place. She wondered how good the other fare might be. She was about to be very pleasantly surprised.

As usual for brunch, coffee and eggs were the order of the day. Both of us were desperate for a caffeine hit, having run out of time before heading to the gym. No need to ask for a strong coffee here; it’s a lovely nutty and flavourful brew. Delish.

Miss Divine ordered her standard brunch dish, pictured at the top of this post. You could be forgiven for thinking it’s a breakfast pizza (given the venue). It’s actually an egg white omelette with spinach, mushrooms and goats cheese. A very attractive-looking plate, Miss Divine commented the mushrooms and cheese are really the stars of the show. She was very satisfied.

Of course, Greedy Girl had to plump for the eggs benedict. Again, this was a very attractive plate but would it pass the ultimate test? Greedy Girl sliced through both poached eggs to reveal perfectly runny centres. Full marks! The hollandaise sauce was slightly tangy, the ham grilled to perfection. Delish.

Eggs benedict. An unqualified yum.

There’s a huge amount of passion and pride here. Everything was absolutely first rate – from the quality of the dishes, to the coffee, to the service. On this experience, Greedy Girl is definitely hungering for more.
